This 30 minute video follows the fascinating life cycle of the Ulysses butterfly (Papilio ulysses joesa), a tropical species found in the rainforests of  North Queensland, Australia. All the stages of the life cycle are shown in great detail, for the first time!

The marvellous images include microscopic photography of the caterpillar hatching out of its tiny egg, as well as the caterpillar shedding and eating its skin as it grows larger. Next the laborious task of pupation, during which the caterpillar spins a silk girdle around its body before changing into a chrysalis can be seen. Finally the amazingly beautiful iridescent blue butterfly is filmed emerging from the chrysalis.
